LATEST NEWS IN THE FLOW

One Year Ago
Friday November 24th 2006, 8:43 pm

It’s hard for me to believe that I started Flow a year ago in November of 2005. I’ve heard lots of bands, recorded many podcasts and visited many live music venues in New York City over the last year.

And since then many more people have picked up the torch by creating their own audio and video podcasts in the music genre. Right on!

There’s so much great indie music out there that it becomes really easy to forget the musicians who are making it happen. So thanks to all those who endured my standing at the edge of the stage with video camera in hand. Or those who had my voice wrecking the lead ins to their perfectly crafted songs on the audio podcasts. It was all great fun.

Here’s to another year of turning the entertainment industry upside down.

No News Is Good News

It’s been a while since the latest news post so I figured it was time to throw something new into the flow.

I’m working on a new Flow Music Mix and also going through scores of footage from the last few months to put together some mixes of the best live performances since we started this thing in November of 2005.

Also, we’ve got some nice video of Brother Love for an upcoming Flow Video: On Location episode.

See ya soon!

We’re All Heathens

Of course we are! Anyhow, we’re going to be back soon with another episode of Flow Video: On Location. Our guest band will be The New Heathens. The heathen boys are a very cool southern / roots rock band from New York City. They’re on the road right now in support of their new CD, Heathens Like Me. Expect to see and hear more of these guys soon on Flow: Music…Liberated!

Gettin Wild

We had a great night last night hanging with the guys from Urbansnake up at Wild Spirits on the far upper east side of New York City. Urbansnake is a no nonsense metal band from the Bronx and Wild Spirits is a no nonsense music venue. Of course, the camera was rollin. Look for the video podcast on this site soon.

Coming Soon

Sorry for the delays on the next Flow Music Mix audio podcast. Busy, busy, busy. But it will be ready very soon. I’ve got a very nice representation of artists so the mix will probably be closer to an hour long.

In other news, I recently shot a pair of shows that featured some really excellent artists, including Kirsten Thien, C-Will and Sophia Ramos.

It’s all good, as they. So I guarantee that your patience will pay off ;)

Getting Googleized

Google Video Logo

You may have noticed that we’ve been replacing the on page QuickTime player with a new flash player. This flash player is courtesy of Google Video. I’ve been uploading all video episodes to their free service and then embedding the Google Video player into the site. This represents a great advantage over embedding QuickTime since many more browsers will support the Flash player. Another cool advantage of integrating Google Video is the fact that you can grab the same snippets of code that I’m using and put these players on your site. Yes, that’s totally okay and I strongly encourage it. Find all of our shareable videos on Google Video by following this link.

Gnarly Feed Issues
Tuesday February 21st 2006, 6:28 pm

We’ve had some problems with the podcast feed related to videos being embedded in the web page. As a result we had to remove the embedded QuickTime players from the pages. The good news is that the RSS podcast feed is healthy and folks can get their flow. The sad news is that almost all of the video won’t be playable in the browser. Have no fear though. We’ve been uploading to Google Video which provides a nifty flash player that almost everyone can view without trouble. So things are looking up.

More great music on the way too. We’ve got footage of Samantha Murphy playing at Rockwood Music Hall in a special solo acoustic performance.

There’s a cool new video sharing site that just came online. It’s called Video Bomb and folks can either submit (via a link) videos or they can “bomb” videos. A bomb is a seal of approval. I’ve added our latest video, On Location with Jody Shelton. Feel free to head over and bomb away!

Streaming The Videos
Friday January 13th 2006, 3:39 pm

Hey folks. Have heard from a few people that the streaming of the videos in the browser ain’t so hot. I’ve tried it myself and it’s barely acceptable on my broadband connection. My file hosting service, Libsyn, is relatively new and they’re struggling to meet the ever increasing demand for mobile entertainment generated by loonie tunes like us. They know about the issue and they are bringing more bandwidth online real soon. We’re going to hang in there with these folks as we’re sure it’s going to get better soon. For the moment, the best way to get the content is to subscribe or use the download link in each post.

In other news, we filmed a great performance by Jody Shelton at Mercury Lounge last night. Look for that on Flow coming up in the near future.

Old Saint Nick will be heading down the chimney any day now. What’s on your wish list for Christmas (or Hanukah)? We recommend one of those neat little Video iPods that the fruit folks are makin for Santa. Once you’ve got it you can subscribe to Flow Audio and Video podcasts, fill that baby up and always have cool music and live performances wherever you go Cool.

In other news, we were able to get Flow Video: On Location episode #7 shot this week in spite of the NYC transit strike. The Cheryl B. Engelhardt show at The Knitting Factory was cancelled. But the Fairmont show at Arlene’s Grocery went off albeit with a small crowd. Thanks guys for braving the traffic and making it to the gig.

Meanwhile, the pre-produced videos are rolling in and that means that episode 1 of Flow TV will be on it’s way very soon. Ho Ho Ho.

Man, time flies when you’re having fun. We headed out last night into the cold to shoot episode #6 of Flow Video: On Location. That means we’re halfway through season 1. The place was the Knitting Factory Tap Bar and the band was The Old Ceremony. Django Haskins and crewe made the trip up to the city this weekend from Chapel Hill, NC and graced the city with some excellent musical performances. Stay tuned for the release of their show in a couple of weeks for a taste of last night’s action.

Caught up with the guys from DealbreakeR over at Kenny’s Castaways last night for Episode #5 of Flow: On Location. They played a great, wild set. A good friend who also happens to be a great R&B musician stopped by and I got him on the video as well. Sorry, you’ll have to watch the episode when it gets released to see and hear all the fun,

Headed out to Don Hill’s on Greenwich and Spring Streets on the west side of Manhattan last night to catch the guys from XRAYGUN in action. The guys played a very tight set, jamming out like true pros and impressing the crowd with some serious chops. Their cover of Pink Floyd’s Young Lust was phenomenal. I can’t wait to get this performance into the flow.

The folks over at PodGuide.tv were nice enough to highlight the first episode of Flow: On Location on the front page of their site. Their write up included some welcome constructive criticism requesting better sound and more close ups. Thanks and we hear you! We’ll be experimenting with different live mic positions as well as more hand held close ups so that we can deliver the experience on the iPod or computer in the best way possible.

Episode #3 Pussycat
Monday November 21st 2005, 2:04 am

I had a blast last night at the Pussycat Lounge filming the musical antics of Dead Language . Lead by Jaime Pannone on guitar and vocals, they play socially conscious rock with a hard edge. The thing I like most about this band is that they’re not afraid to take chances with their music. I appreciate their contribution to season #1 of Flow: On Location.

Production #2 Complete

Oh my, the time is a flyin by. Last night I went over to Bellevue Bar to film a fantastic folk/rock artist named Tim Young . Tim was playing cuts off of his latest CD titled Red and also played a nice Stones cover as well. Okay, time for all that good post production stuff to make it into a show. But when will #1 surface on the site. Very, very soon my friends.
